Since Kira’s staggering defeat of the master detective L, it is up to L’s successors to solve the case that L could not crack. Near and Mello – both of whom were candidates to succeed L – must face off against Kira now that he has taken the very persona of L for himself. Mello joins the Mafia in order to gain the power to subdue Kira, while Near remains calm and collected in his mental battle against the mass-murderer.
In the meantime, Kira has been unwittingly trapped by the preparatory machinations of the fallen L. He cannot move freely, so he enlists the help of an ardent Kira supporter named Mikami. Through the use of him, as well as a TV news anchor named Takada, Kira is able to continue in his plan to purge the world of evil. Will Kira finally slip and give Near and Mello the edge they need to finally bring him to justice? Or will they, like their lofty predecessor, fall prey to the insatiable appetite of an aspiring god? In Kira’s quest to purge the world of evil, it seems he has failed to notice one exceedingly wicked man – himself.
