Mei and Satsuki, two best friends who happen to be sisters too, are finally moving to a new home in the Japanese foothills. True, the house is decrepit and full of interesting soot sprites, but that’s an added bonus for the adventurous Satsuki and Mei. When Mei is outside one day, however, she catches of glimpse of something truly wonderful – a magical forest creature. She follows it into the hollow of a large tree, where she stumbles upon a gigantic version of the magical creature. She scratches its nose, and the monster sneezes loudly and grumbles. She listens intently and, deciding that the monster has said “Totoro” amid his grumblings, names him so.
Mei rushes back to tell her father of the wonderful Totoro, her new best friend. Mei’s father explains that Totoro must be the keeper of the forest, which only makes Mei more excited. When she goes to visit Totoro again, however, he is gone.
Saddened by the loss of her friend, she trudges slowly beside her father and Satsuki as they go to visit their mother, who is hospitalized for a long-term illness. Satsuki gets angry that her mother has been sick for so long, while Mei is more calm about the sickness. But once again, it’s Totoro to the rescue!
It’s up to Totoro and his group of magical forest spirits to cheer the girls up and teach them not only about the forest but about life, love, and happiness too. Can Mei and Satsuki learn how to be happy, even during the hard times? And can Totoro do something to help their mother after all? Mei is only one ride on the Cat-Bus away from finding out!
