In the deep ocean, a little goldfish princess emerges from her home. She slips away from the people charged with keeping her and looks for adventure near the seashore. But as she travels through the polluted water, her head becomes lodged in a jar and she cannot get out. Thankfully, a young boy named Sosuke finds her, frees her from the jar, and keeps her as a pet goldfish.
The more she watches Sosuke, the more she begins to realize how exciting it must be to be human. Mustering all her strength, she’s able to pop out some bird-like legs. She and Sosuke play together and visit Sosuke’s grandmother in a nursing home, where everyone loves the human-goldfish named Ponyo. But it’s up to Sosuke to protect her, even when Ponyo herself is unwittingly causing the very ocean to surge and flood Sosuke’s town. She must continually flee from the ocean rulers trying to capture her, and her adventure finally comes to a climax when she must make a vital decision that will affect not only hers but Sosuke’s life as well. But it seems that Sosuke is the one who truly has the power to determine the future of the rebel fish princess. Can Ponyo stay a human forever? After all she’s seen, does she really want to?
