One of Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpieces from the late 90’s, Princess Mononoke is an epic tale set in a much earlier Japan—during the late Muromachi period. The young prince Ashitaka is cursed by a fallen god as he fights to defend his village; a curse that will slowly and painfully consume him until it eventually kills him. He is forced to abandon his village in search of a cure, and soon wanders into the forest of spirits, bestial gods, and demons. It is there that he meets San, the beautiful wild girl raised by wolves. He then comes into contact with the villagers of the industrial Iron Town. Ashitaka is thrown into the heated conflict between the villagers and the wolf girl—with her fighting to protect the land and them fighting to reap its natural resources—and it quickly turns into an epic battle of man vs. nature. Ashitaka must make a choice between the woman he loves and his fellow man, and the results will be of godly proportions.
